History Committee Announces Book Development

Where The Crooked Tree Stood is a Greater Good Hart sponsored book.

Where The Crooked Tree Stood is about us.  We who share and have shared this amazing and beautiful coastal area called L’Arbre Croche.  Several years back, Connie Cobb began the effort with recorded interviews.  Now, combined with diary excerpts, letters, postcards, cherished album photos and notes, the book is well under way.

We’ve been digging.  Who knew that this area was once home to 14,000 or more Native Americans…”a shore-side home every few rods.”  We’ve met with “homesteader” families, Native American families, families who built the first cabins that morphed into cottages, covered the Resort, Tourist, and Postcard Era, followed the  fishing and  lumbering sagas, chronicled the passenger pigeon, and visited shops and eateries.   Our tour stops in the “fifties” awaiting a sequel.

When?  We hope to collect and continue interviews and layouts throughout the summer.  At present the book is more than half-way complete.

Support!  Please support this effort with your histories and photos.  You’ve seen the number of homes moving away from founding families and with them go precious memories and photos that need to remain to tell the story.  With your permission, Dave Harrell, director of The Harbor Springs Historical Society will archive material and photos at the museum for open computer archive reference.  Their search system is the same as that found on Ellis Island.  For additional information, please contact Connie Cobb at 231-526-2901.
