RFC Firefighters Friends and Neighbors

"Friends and Neighbors",  established in the summer of 2006, is an informal organization open to anyone willing to help our volunteer Firefighters and First Responders. There are no officers, no dues and few meetings.   It was organized after learning that the one mill tax we pay on our winter tax bill covers the firefighters annual operating costs, but does not fund vehicle and equipment needs.
Hence, the group was formed to focus on three tasks:

To communicate the financial needs of the RFC to the citizens they serve.

To provide operational support to the annual Mini Fair

To fund raise as needed to help obtain important equipment (Mini-fair).

If you would like to participate or be included on their mailing list, contact Jim Clarke at 231.526.1209 or jmclarkegh@aol.com.  Be sure to watch for the RFC newsletter coming in your summer tax bill.

Lake Monitoring

Ten volunteers are working with the Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council to monitor different portions of the lake front for algae conditions on a weekly basis.   This data is being turned over to NOAA (National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration) through the Tip of the Mitt.  This data will be used to set observational benchmarks to compare trends on algae accumulation.

Lake Levels

The Army Corp of Engineers publishes the Monthly Bulletin of Lake Levels for the Great Lakes and reported September's "Current Month's Levels Summary":

Max (1986) = 582.3 ft.,

Min. (1964) = 576.4 ft.

Long Term Ave. = 578.9 ft

Last year Ave = 577.4 ft.

Monthly Ave.(Sept.)= 577.3 ft

The 2006 average lake levels were 1.5 feet or 18 inches below the long term average. The September levels were 1.2 inches below the 2006 average depth and 19.2 inches lower than the long term average depth.

Lamkin Road Seal Coating Option

Residents of Lamkin Road have been presented with the option of sealcoating a 14 foot width of Lamkin Road in its existing footprint.   Discussion and fact finding continues on the issue of seal coating Lamkin Drive.  The decision whether or not to sealcoat will be made by the two township boards and the Emmet County Road Commission.

Wooden Bridge Project (M-119)

A motion passed at the September meeting of the Heritage Highway Management Committee to proceed with the plans as submitted by the developer  for the wooden bridge project.  The proposed plan does not call for pedestiran walkways, off-road parking or scenic viewing platforms.  There was consensus from the committee and the community that this was a very workable plan,

Process For Serving on the Board or a Committee

●A nominating committee selects a slate of candidates willing to serve for one year as a director of the GGA.  These nominees are voted on by the general membership at the annual meeting in August.  The officers of the GGA are elected by the directors.

●The board appoints all people to fill any vacancy that occurs during the year.

●The Board of Directors appoints all committee chairs.

To serve at the board level, a person should be available for meetings given five days notice,  from May 1 – December 31.   If you have any interest in getting more involved with the board contact any board member or to help with a  committee, contact the committee chair.   Last year 2 positions on the board were filled because of resignations.
